How America Got Mean: In this article from the September 2023 issue of The Atlantic, David Brooks digs into the lack of “moral formation” that plagues the US. In short, he argues that the US lacks institutions and communities centered around teaching people to be good citizens and generally good humans.
In other words, the current structure of US society is not conducive to people learning from a young age how to leave a clean wake and why that matters.
The article provides an interesting look back at the history and decline of moral education in the US, how that decline has affected the population, and suggestions to counter it and rebuild “a thick and coherent moral ecology.”
